The name DNK has 3 parts:
- Deutscher (German)
- Nachhaltigkeits- (Sustainability)
- Kodex (Code)
Part 1: German
The DNK supports companies in Germany.
Part 2: Sustainability
Sustainability means:
We can only use things
that can grow back in nature.
Otherwise, the people after us won’t
have anything left.
There are 3 areas of sustainability:
- Area 1: The economy
- Area 2: The environment
- Area 3: Living together as a society

Part 3: Code
A code is a set of rules.
The name German Sustainability Code means:
The DNK puts together rules and instructions about
sustainability for companies in Germany.
But the DNK also does other things.
You can read about these in the next section.

What is the DNK?
The DNK is an official department of the German government.
It is a service for companies.
The DNK puts together rules and instructions about sustainability.
The German Ministry of Economics and Climate Action gives money to support the DNK’s work.
The DNK offers help on the subject of sustainability.
The DNK has an office in Berlin.
The DNK team supports companies in Germany on the subject of sustainability.
About 12 employees and interns work at the DNK.

What can the DNK do for companies?
Many companies in Germany have to write a report on sustainability every year.
Some companies choose to write a report.
The report explains what the company does for the environment and for people.
The DNK has a free website for companies.
On the website, the DNK offers companies help with writing their reports.
Because writing the reports should be as easy as possible.
The DNK especially wants to help small and medium-sized companies.
This is why the DNK has always asked companies:
- What kind of help do you need?
- What should we offer on our website?

What is a sustainability report?
A sustainability report gives information about a company or an organisation.
The report says:
This is what the company is doing for the environment and for people.
Example:
- This is how we save electricity and raw materials.
- This is how we treat our workers well.
The report is long and quite complicated.
There are a lot of rules.
It is hard for many companies to write,
especially small and medium-sized companies.
That’s why the DNK helps companies write their reports.

Who can use the DNK’s services?
These are the people who can use the DNK’s services:
- company workers who are writing a report, or
- company bosses who are responsible for the report.
The DNK helps all companies:
- companies that choose to write reports
- companies that have to write reports
- companies writing reports for the first time
- companies that have lots of experience.

What can companies do on the DNK website?
Companies can write reports on the DNK’s website.
It is free and easy to use.
There is a clear plan:

The company can follow the plan step by step.
This saves them time, money and stress.

In Europe, there are lots of rules for writing reports on sustainability.
The DNK has checklists for some of these rules.
The checklists help people write their reports.
Then the companies know:

When did the DNK start?
The DNK started in 2010.
The idea for the DNK came from the RNE.
RNE stands for Rat für Nachhaltige Entwicklung (German
Council for Sustainable Development).

The DNK used to offer a special form for writing sustainability
reports.
But in the last few years, the DNK has been developing its work
more and more.
Now the DNK helps companies in many different ways.
For example, it gives companies tips for writing good reports
and helps them with questions.
The German Ministry of Economics and Climate Action gives
money to help the DNK with its work.
